Marquette falls 79-78 to Providence

MILWAUKEE - Marquette had two chances to take the lead with under 20 seconds remaining on the final possession, but fell to Providence, 79-78, on Saturday afternoon at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Golden Eagles (14-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) trailed by eight points at the break and their second-half comeback fell just short after toppling No. 1 Villanova in their last contest on Tuesday evening.

Redshirt junior Andrew Rowsey scored an efficient 23 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and was perfect on all 10 free throw attempts. Rowsey's left-handed four-point play with 36 seconds remaining pulled what was a six-point game to a single possession.

Haanif Cheatham would pull MU within one on a layup with 23 seconds remaining before PC's Rodney Bullock missed a pair of free throws to set up MU's final possession.

Guard Katin Reinhardt's first shot attempt was blocked out of bounds with six seconds left and the game's final shot rimmed out with just three seconds to play.

Kyron Cartwright led the Friars (1409, 4-6 BIG EAST) with 18 points and six assists.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 1 against St. John's at Madison Square Garden in New York.
