BASKETBALL FALLS, 77-75, TO PROVIDENCE ON NATIONAL MARQUETTE DAY
MILWAUKEE - Freshman Theo John had a career game, but it wasn't enough for Marquette, which lost 77-75 to Providence on National Marquette Day on Saturday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
John posted career bests of 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks for the Golden Eagles (13-10, 4-7 BIG EAST) who have now dropped four-straight games. Sophomores Markus Howard and Sam Hauser paced MU with 16 and 15 points, respectively, as MU shot 0-of-12 from 3-point range after sinking its first four shots from deep.
MU trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half and pulled it to the game's final margin before a pair of missed Maliek White free throws with six seconds remaining. MU freshman Greg Elliott pulled down the rebound, but Howard had the ball stripped on the sideline and MU was unable to get a final shot.
Marquette led 38-37 at the half after shooting 59.3 percent in the frame. Hauser paced the squad with nine points at the break, while Sacar Anim and Howard each had eight.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at Seton Hall.
